There’s a new restaurant opened in Durrat Al Bahrain and it’s causing quite a buzz! Where vintage meets modern; step back in time where things were simple, food was great, company was always lively and stories were told over cup and cups of tea and gahwa.  If you haven’t ventured down or up (not sure what it looks like on the map) then am sure you have either heard about it through friends or checked them out on instagram @basta23bh.  At Basta you will find traditional Bahraini breakfast, dishes, grills and dessert.  Looking for a bit of nostalgia, how about ordering Chips Oman with Cheese and chili sauce or a Samboosa Sandwhich.  That will surely take you back to the good o’l days of when we were young getting our grub from the baqala (barrada) or school cafeterias.  The decor is a throwback to the days where you bought your spices from the souq and dishes were served in hot pots, and arabic 60s music was blaring in the background.

Basta 23 is owned by Amer Alkhan with his wife Sara Buiji and it is very much a family affair.  You will find all members of the family there taking orders, serving the customers and even preparing meals.  A true Bahraini love, warmth and hospitality is felt the minute you walk into Basta and you leave as part of the family.  Basta 23 will be opening branches in town soon.  Location to be revealed later.  In the mean time head up/down 😉 to Durrat with your family and enjoy some Basta time with your loved ones.

The Fyunka Girl Is Coming to Bahrain!

Fyunka is a fashion accessories line created by Jeddah-based designer Alaa Balkhy.  Fyunka is an Arabic slang word and can be defined as a ribbon bow. Balkhy will be selling her exclusive handbags, tote bags, cosmetic pouches, iPad cases, pillows, and more products. “I’m very excited to showcase my collection at BAB Market in Bahrain,” enthused Alaa Balkhy.

First launched in June 2011, Fyunka has become hugely popular because of its strong fashion focus and stylish illustrations that most women in the Middle East can relate to.  The Fyunka brand is all about adding a pop of design into one’s wardrobe with quirky quotes, illustrations and a range of colors.

I got to interview Alaa and find out more about her, her inspiration and lots more (interview below).  Don’t miss the chance to meet Alaa this weekend at Bab Market!

Nothing says spring like flowers! If you thought flowers were just prints on fabric, you’re wrong they represent life, femininity, breath of fresh air, new beginnings and happiness.  A bit too much philosophy first thing in the morning especially when we’re talking about clothes here.  I went a little floral mad whilst browsing through ASOS (more ASOS picks to follow) but I love every single on of these items and am adding some to my shopping cart as I type this blogpost.  All items picked can easily be modestified by wearing with jeans, cardis, drop top hemmed shirts and more.  You will start notice my obsession with peg trousers.. just can’t seem to get enough of them .. sigh

Have you stepped into the Spring spirit? Which pick/picks below is your favorite?

There’s a beautiful farmer’s market in Bahrain, that gives you more than the fruit and veggie that you buy.  I had heard of the farmer’s market in Budaiya and wanted to check out but I didn’t realize the emotions it would bring out in me.  Ok, maybe I am a bit on the emotional, sentimental side but there was something truly magical about the place and I was beaming with it’s aura.  I was first taken a back by the beautiful setting.  It is located at a lush green garden in Budaiya and it made me think that this is what they meant when they say that Bahrain used to be green and full of date palms.  The place was buzzing with people of all nationalities and all the farmer’s had their produce displayed attractively.  There are some farm animals on display which I am assuming is to entertain, educate and allow the kids to pet them (don’t think they were on sale.. or were they :s ? unless you have live cow on your grocery list :p).  I suggest you visit early Sat as it starts from 8am till noon.  You want to be there early to even take advantage of the Bahraini breakfast stalls that offer fresh yummy brekkies.  The line can be quite long and I was there at 10am.  I bumped into some friends there and we were so overwhelmed with the market and how beautiful it was to see everyone buy, sell, laugh, eat, drink tea, picnic in such beautiful, peaceful harmony.  I literally teared up.  This is the Bahrain I know and LOVE.  These are the people of this beautiful island.  Visiting the market not only do you go home with your week’s worth essential grocery shopping but you leave with a heartfelt piece that represents this island.

Location Budaiya Garden – Keep heading straight and pass al Osra till you head passed a few roundabouts.  You will start noticing the signs. The market is held every Sat from 8am till Noon till then end of MAY.

I absolutely adore this collection from Valentino and they are perfect for Spring/Summer.  Yes my picks are mostly in nude but how stunning is the first one with the plexi heel?   I love how feminine, elegant and rock edge these shoes are.  The more I look at them the more I want them all…

What shoes are on  your wish list for Spring /summer?

I was invited to attend The Body Shop’s redesigned store and try out their browsing experience.  The Body Shop has launched a new beauty movement called ‘Beauty With Heart’.  Each of their branches are the pulses and their aim is to encourage a Look Good, Feel Good and Do Good mindset by using their products.  Model Lily Cole is the face of this movement as she herself is a young aspiring activist.  As the three G’s suggest; The Body Shop products are much more than just products that make you feel good. You know that by buying their products you are helping communities and women around the world through their Community Fair trade programs, campaigns, animal welfare and protecting mother earth. When I was a teenager I used to help out and work at The Body Shop and popping into the store brought back some fond memories.  I loved their new layout.  It felt organic, raw and earthy.  They have introduced tables in the center displaying their products which encourage you to ‘browse’ ‘test’ and ‘sample’ their stuff.  There are little empty sample pots on hand to fill and try out the product at home before purchasing! I took home 2 sample pots; the tea tree face mask and the tea tree liquid face wash.  The place was buzzing and I got to bump into my favorite fellow bloggers; which always calls for a quick photo session 😉

Pop into The Body Shop near you, have a browse and grab some sample pots .. the best way to try products.nu

On Saturday I attended a book launch at Words book store in Budaiya.  Bahraini author and fellow Bahrain Bloggers member; Nazli Tawfeeqi held a book signing introducing her first fictional book My Foggy Tomorrow.  The crowd was buzzing and everyone was excited celebrating a local talent and author, amongst the people there was Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid Al Khalifa (@khalidalkhalifa).  Nazli is the President & Founder of New Dawn Society, the first young women society in Bahrain since 2006 and a founding member of Bahrain Bloggers.  Nazli’s book is a social drama about love, betrayal, belief and beyond.

Get your copy from Words Book store in Budaiya and catch Nazli this weekend at Bab Market in Manama Bab Al Bahrain.
