(Heba Al Hassan)

Here is an interview I did with a friend/Bahraini fashion designer Heba Al Hassan that I wanted to share with you.  She has her own unique sense of style and her designs can best be described as traditional fabrics in boho chic designs.  She is a spirited fun character and someone very dear. I am so proud of you Hebsters 🙂

1. How did you get into designing clothes?

When I was living in NYC studying Fashion I was so inspired by the fashion world that was all around me ~ NYC being one of the fashion capitals of the world. So when I came back to Bahrain in 2002 I started designing my own clothes. I had made myself a Ramadan Funky Jalabiya in Ramadan from gitrah fabric (Which I am still renowned for), and got my very first order from Muna Fakhro. When Formula One was coming to Bahrain for the first time I got so excited, and in one month created my very first 250 piece novelty-gitrah/t-shirt fabvric collection.. It had tops, dresses, shirts…Mash’Allah it was a Huge Success, and added so much love and meaning to my life!

2. What inspires you when you start a collection?

I get my inspiration from anywhere honestly…whether it be the latest designer or a flower in nature..but always always I am true to one thing ~ Retro boho chic. I am boho to the core. I love the 1960’s -70’s era of fashion..the colors, the comfort, the hip cool look of it all!

3. How long does it take to get a collection out?

It all depends…in the beginning my pieces were much more simple so I could get away with a couple of months of hard-work…now with the added handwork it takes almost a year to work on…I used very intricate hand-made embroidery in my last Ramadan Collection…very time consuming but gorgeous Mash’Allah in its intricate detailing…it’s like a work of are ~ Hand-work!

4. Describe the Women who wears your designs?

The clothes I design are timeless pieces. I always follow the trends in terms of shapes, cut, and colors, but there is something about the pieces that doesn’t make them stuck to a certain season. They are extremely feminine, and non-constraining. They have a bygone era feel about them. Therefore the women who are attracted to my clothes are the more free-spirited (boho), and young at heart sorts..My clothes are very fun, and spirited. They are conservative, yet attract attention in their uniqueness. So I guess you have to be the kind of woman who is not afraid of being a wall-flower;)

5. Where can we get your designs?

I have a small quaint shop called Darjee tailor-House which is burrowed in the magical side of Umm Al-Hassam. I chose this location for the very reason that it is homey and cosy. It allows me the relaxation of being able to create without being disturbed. I have annual collections which one can choose from, and I design as per order. I welcome everyone with open arms, and enjoy working with all sorts of back-grounds..makes the challenge of creativity much more exciting!

6. Whose style do you admire?

I definitely am a boho Queen at heart. I admire any woman who is not a slave to fashion. A woman who can mix different pieces, and come up with her own style. From the past I adore Brigette Bardott, and from the modern day stars..her modern counter-part Sienna Miller. I love Nicole Richie and Kate Moss too:)

7. If you could do anything else other than designing what would you do?

That’s a funny question, because like a kid in a candy shop…My ideologies keep changing. I am always me..artistic and free-spirited, but where I am at keeps definitely changing. If I could go back…I definitely would have gotten a degree in special needs. Back then, there wasn’t this increase in autism as we see it now. I would have loved to have a degree in special needs. I love and adore children, and believe these kids are so so so special, and would of loved the honor to work with them. Insh’Allah I still will be able to have this chance. It’s never too late. Also…don’t laugh..but I am fascinated with Dolphins..I would so have loved to be a part-time Dolphin Trainer! Nowadays I am tapping into Healing. I have discovered Al-Hamdulil’Allah that I am energetically intuned..and this is something which can allow me to connect and help other people. I am definitely looking into it:)

If you are mad about vintage of the true kind like I am (hate it when the word is used loosely) then the best thing to do when you are in London is to check out The Vintage Guide to London

I was lucky to attend the London Vintage Fashion, Textiles & Accessories Fair which described by many as “the Rolls Royce of the Vintage Fashion Fairs” and THE FIRST & THE BEST Vintage Fashion Fair in London – established in 1999.  This fair takes place approx every 4-5 weeks with over 100 stands, so if you miss one it won’t be the last.  They had everything there and can it can be overwhelming.  I went with my hubby which probably wasn’t the wisest thing to do since I like to browse, take my time, touch things and think of their origins etc where hubby wants me to go have a look and leave 🙂 He’s a man after all and shopping is never the ideal scenario for any man but the fact that he wanted to come with me to a vintage fair he gets bonus points for that.

The few hours I did get to spend there was great! I got to see Christian Dior, Ossie Clark, BIBA vintage clothes and much much more.. The best part of visiting these fairs is getting to do what I love best; people watching.  You get all sorts of people attending these fairs and some very very dedicated to the 50’s retro era.  Half the time it felt like I was standing next to extras from Mad Men and all that was left was to see Don Drapper himself! 🙂

The next date for this event is the 5th of Dec, or just check out the organisers for their up coming event dates.

notice the BIBA 🙂 all BIBA items here …. (droool)
